In one of his stories, Dicks runs out of gas, is refused help by a gas station attendant, and sits in his car, defeated. Beside him lies his blue McDonald’s work uniform. He doesn't explain why it’s there. Later, he uses that same uniform to knock on doors to raise money for a charity, capitalizing on the uniform to earn trust. The uniform sitting on the seat was the "breadcrumb"—it seemed unimportant at first, but it was key to his plan.

Breadcrumbs as small, strategic hints dropped early in a story that foreshadow future events, designed to keep the audience guessing, curious, and engaged.
